Precision-Aire was honored to install multiple HVAC systems in one of the most meaningful and important sites in New York City—the newly renovated World Trade Center Transportation Hub in lower Manhattan. The architectural masterpiece, nicknamed the “Oculus,” is the main station house above the underground PATH terminal and is comprised of a gorgeous light-filled mall concourse lined with retail spaces. Precision worked on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in the Kate Spade, LaCoste, Aldo, Forever 21, Samsonite, and Apple stores.
Installation was typical of many of the retail mall projects—like Roosevelt Field Mall and Walt Whitman Mall—that we’ve done in the past, with one exception: security. All contractors who worked at the site underwent a 2-3 week approval process through Port Authority that included background checks and the final issuance of WTC site ID card. Then, each Precision employee that worked in the building attended a 6-hour orientation. Before entering the site each workday, installers had to show IDs and submit to retina scans. All equipment deliveries had to be scheduled 48 hours in advance through underground roadways to World Trade Center loading docks. The justifiable security measures made the HVAC installations complex and unique, but worth the effort in order to be involved with such a momentous project.
